“Crossfit Afterburn:
Where do I even begin? I started crossfit as a way to get healthier, after 2 years of being a mom, finding time for myself wasn't always easy, so i thought I'd give it a shot. What i didn't expect was the gains i would make not just physically but in my mental health as well. I fell in love with the sport, I've accomplished things i never thought I could and I found a community of support, people that push me to my limits and cheer me on. I've made friends that I'm sure will last a lifetime, and most importantly I've realized how much stronger i am than i thought I was, in all aspects. I want to set a good example for my children and through crossfit i know i can show them that with hard work, consistency, discipline and dedication you can do hard things.” -Claudia O.

Member Spotlight Monday 💡:

The first time I learned what Crossfit is I said to myself, "That’s insane, I can never do that and I will never set foot in a Crossfit gym." Little did I know a few years later it would be part of who I am today. CrossFit helped me become the better version of myself, not only physically but also mentally. I came to a point in my life that I knew exercise made me feel better about myself mentally, since I have always struggled with anxiety and depression. The endorphins I get from exercise help my symptoms to the point where they are almost nonexistent. Throughout my twenties, I would always start a new workout routine but then get bored of it or not be consistent for more than a month or two. When I was 17, I joined a regular gym and I lost a ton of weight, so I tried to do the same this time, except I was incorporating running a lot more. After a month of running and doing some bodyweight routines, my knees started to hurt because of overuse. I got really depressed because I could barely walk, so I took some days off from working out and my mental health started to spiral. That same week I stumbled upon a Crossfit Afterburn advertisement on Instagram. I said to myself, "Maybe I need to try Crossfit. What I’m doing is clearly not working because now I’m injured. The first 3 classes are free, the people featured on the Crossfit Afterburn site don’t look like Thor or Tia Clair Toomey" - not that there's anything wrong with that, but seeing people who looked like me made me feel less intimidated. During my first class I felt super comfortable even though I was new, and JC always made sure I was ok since my knees had gone through a recent injury. I signed up that day to the now-retired 30 min class. In retrospect, getting injured was probably the best thing that happened to me. It made me desperate enough to try something new and that I was terrified of because the movements of Crossfit are so intimidating to a beginner. Crossfit Afterburn has made me more adventurous all around because I gave it a try and it turned out to be the best thing for me. -Elizabeth B.

Coach Tip from @jc_thecoach :

🦋Butterfly Pull-Ups🦋

How to set yourself up:
- Position hands on the bar just outside of shoulder width apart.
-Full Grip on the bar, using your @bearkomplex grips for the best most sturdy grip.

The movement itself:
-Start hanging with your arms fully extended.
-Initiate swing using SHOULDERS! Notice that the swing doesn’t come from the legs.
-Alternate between hollow, extend and arch positions.
-From the arch position drive your legs toward the bar in the hollow position.
-Push down on the bar with straight arms.
-Pull, using arms.
-Pull your chin over the bar.
-Move torso forward while coming down.
-Legs move back, placing the body in an arch position.
-READY FOR ANOTHER REP 💪🏼

Tag us in your butterfly pull-up videos!!!! Let’s see you put that technique to to test.

World Wide Autism Awareness Day is tomorrow. Autism affects 1 in 68 children and generally appears before the age of 3. The outcomes for children’s lives are significantly improved the earlier autism spectrum disorder is identified. Many people with autism spectrum disorder are successfully living and working and contributing to the well being of others in their communities. This is most likely to happen when appropriate services are delivered during the child’s educational years.
